Bareilly: Mystery surrounds the death of 20-year-old Babali who succumbed to burns on Monday night at Ganeshpur village under Shahi police station.Her father Noniram alleged that one of their neighbours, Hariom, had tried to molest the girl. When she resisted and tried to raise an alarm, the accused set her afire. However, the police said the family members recorded contradictory statements and prima facie they found no supporting evidence that suggested that the girl was killed by the neighbour.According to police, Noniram, who is a homeguard, said his neighbour Hariom was a frequent visitor at his house and everybody in his family knew him very well.“On Sunday night, Hariom came to my home to recharge his mobile phone. At that time, I was on duty and my family members were on the terrace. Only my daughter was in the room. Seeing her alone, Hariom tried to take advantage of the situation. When my daughter protested, he poured kerosene on her and fled after setting her on fire. Hearing her cries, my family members came down and tried to douse the fire but it was too late and she had sustained burns,” Noniram said in his complaint. They took her to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.However, SP (rural area), Khyati Garg, told TOI, “During investigations, family members had said the room was locked from inside and in their bid to rescue their daughter, they broke down the door. She was burnt by then. The statements recorded by the family members and girl’s father are contradictory. We are probing the matter from all possible angles. Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged against the accused who is at large.”
