Another fire at Bellandur lake

Barely two weeks after a fire broke out at Bellandur, smoke was seen emanating from the lake on Thursday afternoon. A senior official with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), which is the custodian of the lake, said, “Efforts are being made to prevent such fires in the future. We immediately called the fire department and the Bangalore Development Authority,” said Shonali Singh, who lives nearby. “The lake seems to have caught fire at the same location as the last time. It might be accidental or a case of arson.”KSPCB officials visited the lake to collect samples.

According to residents, the fire broke out around 3.30 p.m. and appeared to have died down, only to blaze again a couple of hours later. “The lake seems to have caught fire at the same location as the last time. We immediately called the fire department and the Bangalore Development Authority,” said Shonali Singh, who lives nearby. According to the fire department, two fire tenders were immediately pressed into service along with a boat. “The fire was brought under control and extinguished around 7 p.m.,” an official said. The reason for the fire is unknown. A senior official with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), which is the custodian of the lake, said, “Efforts are being made to prevent such fires in the future. We will investigate what caused the fire. It might be accidental or a case of arson.” KSPCB officials visited the lake to collect samples. Chairman Lakhman said that methane level at the time of the January 19 fire was 0.002% against the permissible limit of 5% by volume in air. “The fire could have been aggravated by dry grass,” he said, but did not rule out arson.
