Pregnant woman assaulted, loses foetus

The police arrested Papanna and Anand based on a complaint by Harish, whose wife Varalakshmi, 23, was attacked by the gang of five raking up an old enmity. Two people were arrested after a woman’s five-month-old foetus was aborted allegedly due to an assault by five of her neighbours on Saturday. Harish immediately took her to a hospital where the foetus was aborted. According to the complaint, Papanna, his wife Sarasamma and their relatives Akshata, Anand and Sharada allegedly barged into the couple’s house when Varalakshmi was feeding her two-year-old son and beat her. Harish said the accused used to quarrel frequently with them, as they suspected Varalakshmi of helping a girl from their family marry a youth of her choice.

Varalakshmi is a resident of Nenranahalli under Kolar Rural police limits. She was expecting the couple’s second child. Harish is a construction worker. He was away from home at the time of the alleged attack. According to the complaint, Papanna, his wife Sarasamma and their relatives Akshata, Anand and Sharada allegedly barged into the couple’s house when Varalakshmi was feeding her two-year-old son and beat her. Harish got to know about the alleged attack when he returned home at night. The couple decided to go to the hospital the next day. However, Varalakshmi developed severe pain in the wee hours of Sunday. Harish immediately took her to a hospital where the foetus was aborted. Varalakshmi is recuperating, hospital sources said. The police have registered a case. Harish said the accused used to quarrel frequently with them, as they suspected Varalakshmi of helping a girl from their family marry a youth of her choice.
