Goods vehicles protest sees 70% participation

BENGALURU: Urging government to fulfil their demands, the goods vehicle owners’ association on Monday have started their indefinite strike. According to the association, around 70 per cent vehicles in Karnataka have already stopped plying and the life of common man is likely to be affect in couple of days.B. Around 8 thousand tonne materials are carried every day from Bengaluru railway godown and it has been stopped now. The premium rate is continuously increasing and has reached up to 1117%, said the association.

In couple of days, the day-to-day life of public will be affected if government fails to address our grievances and till now none have approached the association," he said and added that goods vehicles have stopped carrying goods to and from airports and shipyards.The association has called for a nation wide protest to fulfill their various demands. Channa Reddy said that there is steep increase in diesel prices and in the 3rd party insurance which has hit the life of goods vehicles owners.Despite knowing the fact that it has become very tough to carry out business by paying the tolls and petrol and diesel, the government has not helped this sector in anyway. The government by levying abnormal taxes on diesel price is causing hardships to the truck owners, if the government really want the truck owners to survive in the market it required to reconsider the present tax structure and keep the diesel prices in an affordable manner said the association press release.In 2012, The diesel and petrol prices which were Rs 45.73 and Rs 73.5 respectively has shot up to Rs 66.37 and Rs 75.06 respectively. Though the prices of the oil has reduced in these years, the central government has levied taxes on petroleum products nearly 8 to 9 times causing steep price increase on diesel, the association said.Even the third-party insurance premium regulatory development authority of India is targeting the goods vehicle owners, and treating all others in a better manner. The premium rate is continuously increasing and has reached up to 1117%, said the association.
