more-in Motorists violating rules on the Tumakuru-Bengaluru highway were surprised when a group of transgenders, and the traffic police, approached them at Lanco Toll Gate in Nelamangala on Wednesday and began talking to them about the importance of wearing seatbelts and following rules while driving. This was part of an effort to minimise violations introduced by the Bengaluru district traffic police along the lines of a similar initiative by their counterparts in Mumbai. The idea, said a senior traffic official, is to rope in members of the transgender community to talk to motorists violating rules instead of fining them. Drivers were given pamphlets on safe driving and traffic rules. “Motorists were overwhelmed by the gesture as the traffic police did not slap fines on them or shout at them,” said the officer. The traffic police hope to run the initiative regularly in the coming months. “The response was good and many motorists have promised the police that they will follow the rules,” said Inspector Ramesh G.R., who led the campaign.
