Street vendors clash with police in Shivajinagar

Mohammed Sadiq, who lodged a complaint, alleged that vendors were attacked despite having received permission from senior traffic police officials. Soon after the incident, hundreds of men gathered at the police station claiming to be from Dalit’s rights and human rights organisations. Sadiq alleged that Inspector Edwin Pradeep, along with 10 other men, assaulted him, his aide Sathish, and two others with helmets and canes, and dragged them from near the church to a junction near Shivajinagar police station. They staged a sit-in protest and blocked the road in front of the police station. Tension prevailed at Shivajinagar traffic police station for some time on Saturday when a large number of people gathered to protest over the alleged assault by traffic police on hawkers who put up stalls around the St. Mary's Basilica during the St. Mary’s feast.

When Sadiq heard that the traffic police deputed to manage vehicle movement around the church started clearing hawkers from the area, he and his associates rushed to the spot and showed the permission letter. A heated argument ensued between the two parties. Sadiq alleged that Inspector Edwin Pradeep, along with 10 other men, assaulted him, his aide Sathish, and two others with helmets and canes, and dragged them from near the church to a junction near Shivajinagar police station. Soon after the incident, hundreds of men gathered at the police station claiming to be from Dalit’s rights and human rights organisations. They staged a sit-in protest and blocked the road in front of the police station. A senior police officer said, “We have ordered an inquiry into the accident. Inquiries so far have revealed that the incident escalated as a man who claimed to be social worker used unparliamentary words against a uniformed police officer who was on duty.”
