more-in A car with five people, returning from a funeral in Ulsoor, was reduced to a mangled mess on Wednesday after colliding head on with a BMTC bus on Doddanekundi Road, leaving three women and a man – the driver – dead. Only one woman survived, suffering major injuries. The deceased have been identified as Levin, 24, a resident of Munnekolala; and Elasamma, 53, Niramala, 51, and Reena, 52, all residents of Doddanekundi. Shreeja, 54, also a resident of Doddanekundi suffered severe injuries, and is being treated at a private hospital in the city. The police said the car overtook another vehicle from the wrong side and collided head on with an oncoming BMTC Volvo bus on the opposite lane on Doddanekundi Road on Wednesday afternoon around 2.30 p.m. Friend’s funeral Elasamma, Nirmala, Reena and Shreeja were close friends and neighbours. A common friend had passed away and the four women went to Ulsoor on Friday morning to attend the final rites. After they visited their friend’s home in Ulsoor, Levin, a relative of the deceased woman, offered to drop the four women to their homes in Doddanekundi as he was also on his way home in Munnekolala. According to the police, Levin was overspeeding on Doddanekundi Road at around 90 kmph. The car overtook a Light Motor Vehicle from the wrong side, and ended up on the opposite lane. This is when the hatchback collided head on with an oncoming BMTC bus, the police added. ‘Speed was a factor’ “The wreckage of the car indicates that the impact of the collision was so high that the front portion of the car was practically crushed. The speed of the car has contributed hugely to the impact of the collision,” said a senior traffic cop, who rushed to the spot after the accident. The police said Levin, who was driving the car, and Reena, the co-passenger on the front seat, were killed on the spot and it was a tough task to retract the two bodies. The three women in the back seat were severely injured and were rushed to a nearby private hospital. Two women – Elasamma and Niramala – succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital and were declared brought dead. Shreeja, the sole survivor, was later shifted to another hospital, where she is being treated. A senior traffic police officer said though her condition was critical, she was out of danger.
