The incident took place around 7.30 a.m., but came to light only later in the evening. According to the police, the victim, Santhosh Shetty, ran a self-service canteen on Avenue Road. He was allegedly abusive towards his wife. Fed up with the harassment, his wife Annapurna, took the help of a family friend Prakash to plan the murder. On Friday morning, when their two children were away, Annapurna and Prakash dragged Santhosh to the bathroom and hit him on the head with a blunt object. Later, to avert suspicion, they admitted him to a nearby hospital claiming that he had slipped and fallen in the bathroom. However, by evening his condition turned critical and he had to be shifted to a superspeciality hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries, the police said. According to preliminary investigation, Prakash, 24, had recently completed LLB and was a family friend. A native of Kundapura, he used to visit the family often. He was familiar with the issue in the family and agreed to help Annapurna, who had confided in him, according to an official. On Friday evening, the police got to know about the incident after Nagarjun Shetty, the victim’s son, gave a complaint. “The son was suspicious about what had happened. The two accused tried to pressurise him not to give a complaint but did not succeed,” the official added. Sheshadripuram police have taken both Annapurna and Prakash into custody. Further investigation is under way.
