Cab hits 3 St John’s students crossing Hosur Rd

Locals, especially on Sarjapur Road, claim pedestrians are often forced to jaywalk as there are no skywalks there. Besides, the pavements have shrunk to make way for widening of carriageways, they alleged.The four-lane Sarjapur Road has turned into a death trap, thanks to lack of speedbreakers and zebra crossings, they added. BENGALURU: Three physiotherapy students were injured when a speeding cab knocked them down while they were crossing Hosur Road near Madiwala checkpost on Sunday evening.Madiwala traffic police said Jeevas, Alen Stephen and Alam Kashaf, all aged between 23 and 24 and students of St John’s Medical College Hospital, were crossing the busy road to reach the hospital when the accident happened at 5.15pm. “We have taken up a case against Darshan and seized his car,” Madiwala traffic police said.Police said Jeevas sustained severe head injuries and was unconscious till late night. Stephen sustained injuries on his thighs and Kashaf on his face.Dr Sanjiv Lewin, chief of medical services, St John’s Medical College Hospital, said one of the students is critically injured, while two others are out of danger.Need amenities for walkersLack of pedestrian amenities is a huge problem on Sarjapur Road, where St John’s Hospital is located and branches off Hosur Road at Madiwala checkpost.

All three are residents of Maruthi Nagar and from Kerala.Cab driver Darshan who was coming from Ayyappa Temple side failed to stop the vehicle on noticing the trio crossing the road and rammed them.The students were rushed to St John’s hospital in the same cab and Darshan later surrendered at Madiwala traffic police station. “We have taken up a case against Darshan and seized his car,” Madiwala traffic police said.Police said Jeevas sustained severe head injuries and was unconscious till late night.
