Many women have uterine fibroids sometime in their life, especially between the ages of 20 and 35. BENGALURU: With a swollen belly , she was mistaken for a pregnant woman. The doctor said she could try getting pregnant a year after the surgery.Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during child-bearing years. In extreme cases, multiple fibroids can expand the uterus so much that it reaches the rib cage. Fibroids range in size from seedlings, undetectable by the human eye, to bulky masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus.

BENGALURU: With a swollen belly , she was mistaken for a pregnant woman. The 34-year-old woman, though, was oblivious to her looks, as she was writhing in pain, which also affected her reproductive abilities. The woman with unusual symptoms underwent a two hour surgery at Motherhood Hospital in Indiranagar, where doctors removed 92 fibroids from her uterus, which had made her appear four months pregnant and given her unbearable pain. While fibroids are very common, hers was an extremely rare case. Shruthi (name changed) said she felt bloated and would bleede xcessively during menstruation, which defied logic and hinted that something was wrong. Shruthi, who got married in February 2018, was keen on conceiving but had an abortion when she was five weeks pregnant in August 2018.Working in Bengaluru as an accounts manager, Shruthi first consulted a doctor in her hometown Davanagere, who confirmed the presence of two or three fibroids in her uterus, which could be removed after she delivered her first child. For a second opinion, she met another doctor in Bengaluru who suggested the same though it was suspected that the number of fibroids could be more.It was only when she approached Dr Suhasini Inamdar, consultant gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, that Shruthi got a clear picture. The fibroids were pushing her uterine tube, affecting her ability to conceive, and she required an immediate myomectomy ,surgery for removal of fibroids.“My periods had become a nightmare with excessive bleeding, which left me bedridden,” said Shruthi.Dr Suhasini said, “There were 92 fibroids of various sizes in her uterus. It was a tough surgery as I had to make sure the removal of fibroids didn’t hurt her uterine wall and tubes as she was yet to conceive. Preserving her uterus was equally challenging.”The larger fibroids ranged from 2.3cm to 8.7cm in size. Shruthi is currently on medication. The doctor said she could try getting pregnant a year after the surgery.Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during child-bearing years. Also called myomas, they aren’t associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer and almost never develop into cancer. Fibroids range in size from seedlings, undetectable by the human eye, to bulky masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus. In extreme cases, multiple fibroids can expand the uterus so much that it reaches the rib cage. Many women have uterine fibroids sometime in their life, especially between the ages of 20 and 35.
