Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kumaraswamy has provided Rs 25 crore as grant to each of the larger religious institutions like Tumakuru’s Siddaganga mutt (Lingayat) and Adichunchungiri ( Vokkaliga ) mutt. Having visited all major mutts and religious institutions, soon after taking oath as Karnataka chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy on Friday gave credence to the fact that his spiritual and religious beliefs had a say in even his political and administrative decisions.Presenting his first full fledged budget, Kumaraswamy earmarked Rs 115 crore as grants for 42 big and small mutts. The other prominent Suttur mutt (Lingayat) was given a grant of Rs 5 crore.Further, the CM also announced grants of Rs 1 crore to Rs 3 crore for 39 smaller mutts and religious institutions. The smaller mutts have representations from small but influential communities at the local level across the entire state. When questioned about the grants to the 39 smaller mutts ahead of the LS polls, Kumaraswamy defended the allocation that it was not the first time that such allocations were being made towards the mutts.“Over the last 10 years, successive governments have given funds and grants to the mutts. This time too we have given grants to the smaller mutts as there was a long standing demand from these small communities and neglected religious institutions,” he said.On the Rs 25 crore allocation to the three prominent mutts, Kumaraswamy said the contributions by the Siddaganga mutt and its most prominent pontiff who passed away recently, Shivakumar swamiji, in various walks of life could not be ignored.“As for the influence of Balagangadharanath swamiji on society and various sphere of life through the Adichunchungiri mutt also cannot be ignored,” he said.It may be recalled that in December 2018, the state government in its supplementary budget had allocated two mutts of Sringeri and Adhichunchangiri mutts in the state under three different heads funds of close to Rs 24 crore.Between 2008 and 2013, the then BJP government had doled out no less than Rs 500 crore, with former CM and current opposition leader B S Yeddyurappa alone giving Rs 110 crore to temples and mutts between 2008-2011.
