Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman adopts Kalena Agrahara lake

BENGALURU: Nirmala Sitharaman , Union minister for commerce and industry, adopted Kalena Agrahara lake near Ban nerghatta on Saturday. "Every month, the committee should meet and discuss the steps taken for the lake development. Illegal garbage dumping and release of untreated sewage have degraded the lake, and residents have held several protests demanding its restoration.Nirmala visited the lake on Saturday. Tenders will be called for and the lake development will be done by March 2018," she said.Once the lake is rejuvenated, every month water quality tests could be conducted to make sure that water body does not get polluted, she said.By - She suggested that a committee be formed with elected representatives as its members.

The Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka said she would provide funds for the upkeep of the lake under the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.Nirmala said: "This is a wet land and untreated effluents can no longer be released into it. No new industrial establishments will be allowed to come up in this area, due to the wetlands protection act," she said.She said 1km walkway on the lake boundary would not be covered with concrete to ensure that water absorption took place. She suggested that a committee be formed with elected representatives as its members. "Every month, the committee should meet and discuss the steps taken for the lake development.
