DPI to conduct fourth round of RTE admissions

Parents of children who get an RTE seat in the fourth round could switch schools and demand a refund of the fees. More than one-and-a-half months after the academic year commenced, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has decided to conduct a fourth round of seat allotment under the RTE quota. Sowjanya, Commissioner for Public Instruction, said that the demand for the fourth round came from parents who had noted the vacant seats. Of 1.25 lakh RTE seats in private schools, as many as 1.07 lakh have been filled. D. Shashi Kumar, general secretary of the Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka, said this would impact the finances of private schools.

Yogananda said that the department opened the applications on Saturday. “Some parents are in a dilemma as they have admitted their child by paying the regular fee, but want to exercise this option, as getting a seat would ensure that they do not have to pay fees for the next eight years,” he said. He wants the department to advance the process next year so that it is completed before the academic year.
