The doctors of the Surgical Gastroenterology department at AIIMS, Bhopal, successfully removed a huge spleen using advanced laparoscopic technique. Young female in her thirties was suffering from a rare blood disorder. Patient consulted in the haematology department of AIIMS, Bhopal where she was found to be suffering from hereditary spherocytosis. In this condition spleen, an organ known as the graveyard of red blood cells, overkills young red blood cells due to their congenital structural defect. "She was having recurrent jaundice and anemia since childhood and needed multiple blood transfusions for correction of anemia. She was referred to us for spleen removal" Informed Dr Vishal Gupta, Additional Professor, Surgical Gastroenterology who performed the surgery. "Her spleen was hugely enlarged when we assessed her. This large spleen was causing abdominal pain and discomfort. Initially we thought of removing it by conventional "open" method. However, given her young age and small kids, we planned for laparoscopic surgery for her benefit. Laparoscopic spleen removal isa technically challenging procedure and is not commonly adopted specially with a very large spleen" added Dr Vishal.
