BHUBANESWAR: Doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here saved a newborn baby girl from a very critical medical condition. The underweight baby's small intestine was not in right place. She is safe now after doctors operated on her successfully, said the hospital sources. The girl, a premature baby of 31 weeks, was born on January 12. She is the first child of a couple of Khurda district. Her weight was only 1.2 kg during birth. The doctors found the baby was vomiting a liquid of yellow colour and facing severe problem while taking breath. Later she was kept in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for further treatment. When condition of the baby deteriorated, the doctors from Neonatology department discussed with Pediatrics Surgery department on the baby's complications after nine days of the delivery. After medical test, the pediatric surgeons found the baby's small intestine was not in right place. She was underweight with malformation of gut. In medical term, it is called as Intestinal Malrotation, said the doctors.Weight of the baby was reduced to less than one kilogram within nine days of the delivery. "Though it was a great risk to operate on a severely underweight and premature baby, we took risk and conducted surgery to save her," said Dr Manoj Kumar Mohanty , head, Pediatrics Surgery, of the hospital. He said the intestine was going to be affected due to its malrotation. Her eyes were also affected due to the condition. "We operated on the baby on right time. Timely operation prevented the intestine from getting further infection," said Dr Mohanty.A team of doctors from Neonatology, Anaesthesia and Pediatrics Surgery departments led by Dr Mohanty took two hours to complete the operation. After this, she started taking breath like a normal child. She is gaining weight after the operation. Now she is 1.7 kg and condition of her eyes is improving. "We will discharge her within a day or two," said AIIMS superintendent Dr Dillip Kumar Parida."This is a rare case because of its three conditions- underweight, premature and intestinal malrotation. Normally babies in this condition don't survive. It is a first case for AIIMS Bhubaneswar," said Dr Parida. He said Odisha is known for highest case of infant mortality rate. "These types of cases happen sometimes and infants die due to lack of proper medical attention. This surgery helped the baby to get a new life," he said, adding, "AIIMS has started operating preterm newborn baby with underweight. Parents of the babies with these difficulties can consult with the hospital."
