CHANDIGARH: Punjab Ekta Party (PEP) leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira will contest the Lok Sabha election from Bathinda as the candidate of the Punjab Democratic Alliance (PDA). In a virtual challenge to sitting SAD MP and food processing minister Harsimrat Badal, Khaira, former leader of opposition in Punjab assembly, said on Saturday, "Now we will fight it out in Bathinda..."Talking to media persons, Khaira said he will stick to Bathinda, but if Harsimrat shifts to Ferozepur, they have another plan.In the event of Harsimrat changing her constituency, Khaira said Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) leader Simarjit Singh Bains may contest against her even though the Ferozepur seat had been allotted to the CPI. “I had a talk with Bains sometime back and he had showed interest. But it needs to be discussed further," he added.Khaira said, “It needs to be seen if Harsimrat admits defeat and runs away from her seat, Bathinda. Then, it will be a moral defeat for her. Congress too should field (finance minister) Manpreet Badal from there.”Urging SAD Taksali leader Ranjit Singh Brahmpura to pull out Gen JJ Singh (retd) as candidate from Khadoor Sahib and to back Paramjit Kaur Khalra, Khaira said they would compensate them (Taksalis) with another seat, say Chandigarh. Khaira expressed the hope that the 'panthic' party would respond favourably to his request and understand thier sentiment, despite the proposed alliance between PDA and Taksalis not working out. He said they had announced their candidates before others as they don’t have the moneybags like traditional parties and needed adequate time to reach out to voters. It was Patiala MP Dharamvira Gandhi who announced Khaira's name as their candidate from Bathinda saying that the latter had been at the forefront of the fight on Punjab-related issues for two decades.Clarifying that PDA members did not have anything to do with Dera Sacha Sauda, Khaira said, “It is the rival parties who had approached the Dera for votes.” He also blamed the Badal and Amarinder families for Punjab's colossal Rs 2.5 lakh crore debt burden.
