To curb suicide attempts, grills, safety nets to be installed on Haridwar bridges

Haridwar: The Haridwar district administration will install grills and safety nets on bridges in the holy city to curb suicide bids and selfie-related accidents. There are 45 bridges over Ganga river and upper Ganga canal in Haridwar district. Most cases of attempted suicide have been reported from bridges like Laltaro, Singh Dwar, Rishikul, Pul Jatwada, Bhadrabad, Kaliyar Pul and Roorkee Bridge. The other bridges will also be included in this plan.”“Around 20 cases of attempt to suicide and selfie mishaps have been reported here since last year. Rawat said that initially the exercise will be conducted in three bridges located near Dam Kothi guest house close to Har-Ki-Pauri ghat.

According to police, at least 20 cases of people trying to jump off bridges to kill themselves or accidentally falling off of them have come to light since the past year.Haridwar district magistrate Deepak Rawat said that the Haridwar Roorkee Development Authority has been given directions in this regard. Rawat said that initially the exercise will be conducted in three bridges located near Dam Kothi guest house close to Har-Ki-Pauri ghat. There are 45 bridges over Ganga river and upper Ganga canal in Haridwar district. Most cases of attempted suicide have been reported from bridges like Laltaro, Singh Dwar, Rishikul, Pul Jatwada, Bhadrabad, Kaliyar Pul and Roorkee Bridge. Just last week, a newlywed who was taking a selfie with her husband on Laltaro bridge fell into the Ganga but was luckily rescued by local residents.The administration had earlier issued orders to increase the height of the bridge walls.The Haridwar DM said, “In the first phase, grills and safety nets have been placed on Laltaro, Hathi Pul and Shiva Setu near Har-ki-Pauri. The other bridges will also be included in this plan.”“Around 20 cases of attempt to suicide and selfie mishaps have been reported here since last year. Of these, five people died of their injuries. The others were rescued by police divers and local residents,” said Chandr Bhan Singh Adhikari, SHO (city) police station.
