Delhi couple's murder: Uttarakhand court awards death penalty to main convict

DEHRADUN: A court in Uttarakhand 's Vikasnagar town awarded death penalty to the main convict in the murder case of a Delhi couple in Chakrata area in October 2014. On October 24, the couple hired a cab to go to Chakrata, some 135km from the state capital. Moumita hailed from Kalyani in West Bengal while Avijit was the native of Dum Dum near Kolkata. Moumita was a teacher taught at Gurugram’s Pathways International School while Avijit was a painter by profession.The couple had reached Dehradun on October 21 and celebrated Diwali there. However, their families lost touch with them after October 23, 2014.Probing the disappearance of the couple, the police, almost after 18 days, arrested cab driver Raju Das who confessed that he robbed the duo and pushed them off a steep cliff.The couple was staying at a rented house in south Delhi’s Lado Sarai.

Three other accused have been given life term in the case.However, the court dropped raped charges against the four accused due to the absence of required evidence.The four men — cab driver Raju Das (25), Kundan Das (22), Babloo Das (27) and Guddu Das (26) - were found guilty of murdering Moumita Das (27) and Avijit Paul (24).Additional district judge (ADJ) Mohammad Sultan awarded death penalty to Raju while Kundan, Babloo and Guddu were sentenced to life in prison on Friday.Moumita and Avijit Paul had gone to Chakrata to celebrate Diwali. However, their families lost touch with them after October 23, 2014.Probing the disappearance of the couple, the police, almost after 18 days, arrested cab driver Raju Das who confessed that he robbed the duo and pushed them off a steep cliff.The couple was staying at a rented house in south Delhi’s Lado Sarai. Moumita was a teacher taught at Gurugram’s Pathways International School while Avijit was a painter by profession.The couple had reached Dehradun on October 21 and celebrated Diwali there. On October 24, the couple hired a cab to go to Chakrata, some 135km from the state capital. From there, police said, the couple had asked Raju to take them to Tiger Fall.Moumita’s father had registered a missing person report at Saket police station on October 29.While probing the matter, Delhi Police found that the last phone call from Moumita’s number was made to Raju’s number on October 23 and since then there was no information on their whereabouts. Moumita hailed from Kalyani in West Bengal while Avijit was the native of Dum Dum near Kolkata.
