UTC to add 250 new buses to its fleet

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation ( UTC ) will add 250 new buses to its fleet and phase out those that are unfit to ply. At least half of these buses would be deployed on hilly routes.The UTC was under fire after a roadways bus fell into a gorge in Tehri district, leaving 17 people dead. It had emerged that the bus was unfit to ply and had lost its front wheel and gone out of control after hitting construction material on the road.The announcement of new buses was made by transport minister Yashpal Arya on Sunday.“A proposal has been made to procure 250 new buses which will be bought in the next four to five months,” said Deepak Jain, general manager (operations), UTC.Jain added that almost half of the new buses would be deployed on hilly routes while about 150 old buses plying on hilly routes would be phased out.Significantly, UTC has a fleet of 1,100 buses and caters to the needs of over 1 lakh passengers every day.
