Ex-servicemen protest sealing of war hero’s memorial

Dehradun: The sealing of 1971 war hero Lt Gen Hanut Singh’s memorial on Rajpur Road by Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has triggered resentment among the ex-servicemen fraternity in the city.Citing land ownership rights, the DMC had sealed the premises of memorial situated inside an ashram on Rajpur Road. A memorial should never be considered an encroachment.”State BJP president Ajay Bhatt said, “Since the land belongs to the civic body, they are the final authority. However, I have urged the civic officials to not seal a war hero’s memorial.” Lt Gen Singh is also known as the ‘saint general’ because of his inclination towards spirituality.He led the 17 Poona Horse Regiment during the Battle of Basantar in the Bangladesh war of 1971 for which he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. The matter had come to light on Saturday following which many retired officers opposed the move.Brig (retd) K G Behl of the Uttarakhand Ex-servicemen League, said, “Instead of popularizing the spot for those who want to pay obeisance to our war heroes, the civic body is sealing such structures.
