When asked why the girls’ hostel had a male warden, the school staff said that “the female warden had not been well for the past few days and that’s why a male warden was appointed at the girls’ hostel.” Dehradun: The boarding school in Dehradun embroiled in a rape controversy was earlier served notices by the state education department to upgrade its security and install CCTV cameras but it did not pay heed. The spot where the girl was allegedly raped is a dark and dingy area just behind the main building of the school and has no CCTV. Additionally, the girls’ hostel has a male warden, students told TOI.According to officials of the education department, around 300 schools across the district had been given notice by the education department to upgrade their security arrangements and to install CCTV cameras at the campus.“We had given notice to the boarding school first in October last year and then another notice was given in March this year. The school kept saying that they have upgraded their security and installed cameras as well but they had not done so,” said Dehradun chief education officer S B Joshi.A visit by TOI to the school on Wednesday also revealed that it had just one security guard stationed at the gate and none in the school campus.Some members of the school staff said that they were told that the administration had installed the cameras but they didn’t know where they were.
