BJP’s poor show in CM’s own constituency leaves party red-faced

Dehradun: The BJP’s defeat in chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat’s home turf - Doiwala - has come as a major embarrassment for the party. Of the 20 corporator seats of Doiwala for which the results were announced, seven seats each were won by the Independents and the BJP. In the 2017 assembly elections, CM Rawat had contested from the Diowala constituency and defeated Congress candidate Heera Singh Bisht. The Congress was successful in winning six corporator seats in Doiwala.Congress leader Mathura Dutt Joshi said, “This reflects how the CM is viewed in his own constituency. The BJP’s ticket for the post of chairperson of Doiwala nagar palika parishad went to Nagina Rai after much deliberations. On Tuesday, she lost to Congress candidate Sumitra Devi. Rai was defeated by Sumitra by a slender margin of 166 votes.To make matters worse, the BJP managed to win only seven of the 20 corporator seats in the highly-watched Doiwala constituency. In the 2017 assembly elections, CM Rawat had contested from the Diowala constituency and defeated Congress candidate Heera Singh Bisht. Of the 20 corporator seats of Doiwala for which the results were announced, seven seats each were won by the Independents and the BJP. The Congress was successful in winning six corporator seats in Doiwala.Congress leader Mathura Dutt Joshi said, “This reflects how the CM is viewed in his own constituency. In 2017, the BJP won 57 seats but it has failed to deliver and as a result it has performed poorly.”BJP state president Ajay Bhatt said, “In many seats, voters have rejected the Congress and voted for the BJP. In the seats where the party did not do well, we will make a detailed analysis.”
