After a tie, ‘lucky draw’ decides winner in Devprayag municipality

Dehradun: A lucky draw was conducted to decide the winner after two candidates tied for the post of councillor in ward number two in Devprayag nagar palika in Tehri district.The officials at the counting centre found themselves in a tricky situation after Sunita Devi and Sangeeta Devi, both independent candidates, bagged 148 votes each after the final round of counting.According to Sonika, district magistrate, Tehri district, “After counting was completed for ward number two (Mandir Mohalla) in Devprayag nagar palika, it was found that both candidates got the same number of votes.”The returning officer of Devprayag municipality, Ashish Bhatt, then decided that the tie would be settled with a lucky draw.Bhatt told TOI, “The names of both candidates were written on a piece of paper and placed in a transparent box from which a young child picked the name of the winner.”The officials said that the ward witnessed over 67% voting with 309 votes being polled out of 461 voters in the ward.
