NAINITAL: Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Friday issued notices to the Centre, state governments of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana , NCR and the state mission for clean Ganga as well as Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board seeking replies within two weeks on steps being taken by them to keep Ganga and Yamuna rivers clean. The matter was heard in the division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Ramesh Chandra Khulbe. Stating that "river Saraswati has been lost already", the court said that "if efforts are not done now, coming generations will only know about these rivers through films and documentaries." I hope some concrete action will take place now.”Taking suo motu cognizance of the 19-page letter, the HC had commented that merely holding meetings and seminars and not taking any concrete steps will not yield any results. The court had also added that if the current situation continues, these rivers may cease to exist. The respondents had failed to file their replies before the court within the stipulated time period and now the case will be heard next on January 11, 2019.Ajay Veer Pundir, amicus curie in the case, told TOI, “The honourable court has asked the Centre, states and other bodies responsible for cleanliness of Ganga and Yamuna to apprise the court about steps taken to keep the revered rivers clean and healthy.”Directing the state and central governments to “maintain cleanliness and piousness of Ganga and Yamuna,” the bench stated that the state and central governments should make an endeavour “to take immediate steps to stop dumping of garbage, sewage and industrial waste into Ganga and Yamuna rivers.”The court also remarked that the rivers not only provide drinking water but also have great contribution in agrarian revolution in the country.Ajay Gautam, the activist who wrote a 19-page letter to the HC justices in September this year regarding the pitiable state of the rivers, said, “I am happy that the honourable court has taken notice of the lackadaisical attitude of the governments and other agencies.
