Roorkee to get Uttarakhand's first ‘City Livelihood Centre’

The officials of Roorkee Municipal Corporation (RMC) claimed that the centre will be the first of its kind in Uttarakhand The CLC will also work as a platform for self-help groups (SHGs). In Roorkee, it will be set up in Baarat Ghar (wedding house) premises with an initial cost of Rs 10 lakh in the next few months. ROORKEE: The civic body in Roorkee will soon establish a City Livelihood Centre (CLC) which will work as a medium between skilled workers looking for jobs and city residents who want services at their doorsteps.The CLC will have a call centre facility where people can call and ask for carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians and other such service providers.The centre is being opened under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), a central government initiative to generate employment. The government is planning to set up CLCs in all the six municipal corporations of the state. Officials said that the SHGs functioning in the city and nearby areas will now have “a permanent address-- a one stop shop where they can sell their products and services.”“CLC would be a call centre-like entity where we will receive online and offline requests from people for their domestic works.

It will also provide marketing facility for products made by the SHGs.,” said Ashok Kumar Pandey, chief municipal commissioner.Apart from these services, the RMC will also give training to people who are interested in learning new skills.“If anyone is interested to learn the job of an electrician, carpenter or other such profession, we will train him,” said Pandey. The government is planning to set up CLCs in all the six municipal corporations of the state.
