CHANDIGARH: As many as 163 passengers travelling in Delhi-Dehradun flight on Saturday morning had a miraculous escape after one of the two engines of the aircraft failed in the air near Dehradun and the plane was forced to land at the Chandigarh airport in emergency conditions.The aircraft (Jet Airways 9W703 Boeing 737) was to land at Dehradun at 8.45 am, but had to land in Chandigarh at 8.30 am. ATC Chandigarh handled the situation professionally and came to the rescue of the aircraft,” sources said.Some of the senior officials related to ATC and the airlines told TOI that though the ATC Chandigarh keeps surveillance on flights operating from Chandigarh, Dehradun, Shimla, Bhuntar in Himachal Pradesh , Ludhiana and Adampur in Punjab and Sarsawa in Uttar Pradesh, the landing of Jet Airways aircraft on Saturday was little tricky as it had to remove the entire material as well as the workforce within minutes from the runway to ensure the safe landing of the aircraft.The resurfacing work at the Chandigarh airport runway is going on round-the-clock to make the airport operational 24 hours by April 1, 2019. However, all passengers landed safely and departed for Dehradun by another aircraft.The air traffic control of the Indian Air Force (IAF), which provides air surveillance service to aircraft operating from Dehradun, ensured safe landing of the aircraft within 10 minutes of receiving the information about the vulnerability of flight due to failure of one of the two engines.Source told TOI that when the ATC of local airbase received information about the technical problem, hundreds of workers were engaged in resurfacing work of the runway, with 70-80 vehicles at the area.
