Child rights panel head pulls up hospital over failure to take DNA tests

DEHRADUN: A week after ordering Government Doon Medical College and Hospital (GDMCH) to conduct DNA test of two babies after a woman alleged that her newborn was swapped , the chairperson of Uttarakhand State commission for Protection of Child Rights ( USCPCR ) Usha Negi landed in the hospital on Tuesday to pull up the management.The chairperson had directed the hospital to conduct DNA testing on March 6 following allegations of baby swapping.

After the chairperson reached the hospital, DNA samples of both set of parents and the two newborns were collected.On March 5, a woman had alleged that her male child was swapped with a girl. The family has also filed a police complaint.The chairperson said, “It is shameful that officials deployed for such sensitive jobs fail to understand the pain of the victim’s family.”The hospital authorities said that they had not conducted DNA tests as they were waiting for directions from police.According to the medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr K K Tamta, “We could not go ahead with DNA testing as the family had filed a complaint against the hospital itself. Without the intervention and presence of police the sampling was not possible. The tests were organized in the presence of officials concerned on Tuesday.”
