Uttarakhand government Finally Awake, announces new guidelines amid Covid19 surge

Uttarakhand recorded the highest single-day spurt in COVID-19 cases yesterday with 2,220 people testing positive for the disease. 

Amid a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, the Uttarakhand government on Friday announced a slew of restrictions to combat the further spread of the deadly infection. The announcement comes a day after more than 700 new infections were reported at the Kumbh Mela, which is currently being attended by thousands of devotees in Haridwar.

Uttarakhand chief secretary Om Prakash announced that public transport such as buses, auto-rickshaw, etc shall operate with no more than 50 percent of their total sitting capacity. The same 50 percent occupancy rule will be applied to gymnasiums across the state.

Meanwhile, coaching centers, swimming pools, and spas have been completely closed until further notice.

Curiously, the Uttarkhand government said only 200 people will be allowed at social as well as religious gatherings in the state.

A night curfew will be imposed across the state starting from 10.30 pm every night till 5 am with immediate effect. Persons over 65 years of age and pregnant women and children below 10 years of age are advised not to leave the house, said Om Prakash.

The previous record of a single-day rise in the number of cases was witnessed on September 19 last year when the state reported 2,078 cases.

With 2,220 people testing positive yesterday, the total number of coronavirus cases climbed to 1,16,244 in Uttarakhand. Nine more people succumbed to the viral disease, taking the death toll to 1,802.

A total of 12,484 COVID-19 patients are under treatment in the state while 99,777 have recovered.
