Kakra crocodile trail sees dip in summer tourism

RUDRAPUR: After a summer lull in tourism due to reduced crocodile sightings, authorities anticipate a rise in winter visitors to the Kakra Crocodile Trail in the Khatima Surai forest area. The trail, established in December 2021 within the Kakra Nala area in US Nagar district, draws tourists from various regions. The natural habitat for crocodiles is home to approximately 100 marsh crocodiles. The forest department has taken proactive measures and constructed a watch tower for both visitor safety and wildlife observation.As per officials, from April to September this year, the trail hosted 5,286 tourists. This is the second incident of a crocodile sighting in the area in two weeks. Experts believe that the crocodiles may be traveling downstream in search of mates and new territories. The captured crocodile will be released back into its natural habitat soon. The increase in these stray cases may be due to degradation of their existing habitats or an increase in their population in certain areas.
