Several roads in Dehradun witnessed traffic jams in different areas due to rallies of political leaders who filed nominations for the Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday. The traffic police had also diverted several routes that made the situation worse. Despite the presence of two or more personnel on main roads and junctions like Clock Tower, Paltan Bazaar, Haridwar Road, Buddha Chowk, Dilaram Chowk and Survey Chowk among others, traffic jams remained bad there till afternoon. Many locals blamed the increased movement of political leaders and their supporters on roads for their sufferings. Some also stated that the police should have made proper arrangements to streamline the traffic considering the expected crowd during rallies. "Such chaotic movement on roads and heavy traffic jams are not new during elections but it is still a huge inconvenience for us. It affects our whole schedule from dropping our kids at school to going to the office. I do not understand why such events are not organised during less busy hours. All politicians seem unsympathetic to our miseries," a Patelnagar resident Mayank Sharma said. A homemaker Navya Singh said that the police should also make suitable arrangements to ensure people follow traffic rules. "People using two- wheelers arriving from one side insert their vehicle to the other side in the hope that they will reach ahead fast rather than remain stuck behind a car. The vehicles opposite their lanes fail to cross the road. This leads to more severe traffic jams than it actually would if people will just remain in their lanes on roads and follow traffic rules. Police also neglect this behaviour during the chaotic hour when such people should actually be punished," she added. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the traffic police are continuously monitoring traffic conditions in Dehradun. The police will make necessary changes in plans accordingly to prevent traffic jams on main roads during elections, he added.
