RUDRAPUR: The Rudrapur municipal corporation has failed to get the Kalyani river desilted and over 70 nullahs in the city cleaned, even as monsoon is set to hit Uttarakhand around June 16.Last year, too, the corporation had failed to clean nullahs and desilt the river leading to flooding of the city during the rainy season, but civic body officials failed to learn a lesson and missed the June 10 deadline fixed by mayor Soni Koli.Leader of opposition in the corporation Lalit Miglani alleged that discrepancy in awarding tenders was responsible for tardy progress of cleaning work."Keeping in mind that monsoon arrives by June 16, desilting and cleaning works should have been completed in advance. People are already bearing the brunt of waterlogging on roads during pre-monsoon rains. Even little shower is enough to turn city roads into sewerage," said Miglani"The clogged drains will fill roads dug up for various projects. No thought has been given to cleaning sewerage lines in narrow lanes and unplanned areas," he added. The river and most of the sewerages are clogged with sewage. With only three earth moving machines at work, the MC is able to clean only 16 out of the 70 nullahs.Adarsh Colony area councillor Gaurav Khurana alleged, "River and nullah cleaning is yet to get the required momentum. A meeting was conducted with all stakeholders about their contribution in the river desilting, but public participation seems to be declining and needs to be enhanced."Mayor Soni Koli said, "The work has been distributed among five ward offices, so the target can be achieved. Nullahs will be cleaned by this week, and works which started late will be completed by June 15," she said. She also refuted the charges of discripancies in awarding tender for cleaning nullahs. "Everything has been done within the ambit of corporation and with the consent of officials and councillors," she said.Gola Idrees, a local resident, said, "Due to clogged nullahs, Gava Chowk and Agrasen Chowk areas saw worst waterlogging last year. The river is likely to flood Awas Vikas and Jagatpura areas this monsoon as desilting work has not been completed. The river looks like a messy sewerage, despite the corporation spent lakhs of rupees on cleaning."
