Businessman files complaint against extortion calls

A Preet Vihar-based businessman has filed a complaint against repeated extortion calls by people claiming to be associates of gangster Neeraj Bawana, who is currently lodged at Tihar Jail, the police said on Thursday. The victim dismissed the call as a prank but received more calls later. Confirming that a written complaint had been received at Preet Vihar police station, a senior officer said, “Based on his written complaint, we have registered a case under Sections 387 [putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion] and 506 [punishment for criminal intimidation] of the IPC.” I have provided call details to the police for further action,” said the victim.

The caller introduced himself as a member of the Neeraj Bawana gang and demanded ?2 crore in exchange for sparing the life of the businessman’s son. The victim dismissed the call as a prank but received more calls later. “My family is terrified... I have provided call details to the police for further action,” said the victim. Confirming that a written complaint had been received at Preet Vihar police station, a senior officer said, “Based on his written complaint, we have registered a case under Sections 387 [putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion] and 506 [punishment for criminal intimidation] of the IPC.”
