Agra youth live-streams suicide, 2,750 people watch but don’t call cops Heartbroken for not been able to join Indian Army and believing himself to be guilty for disappointing his parents, a 24-year-old youth live-streamed his suicide on Facebook on Wednesday early morning in Agra. GURUGRAM: A 27-year-old man started a Facebook live video to say he would commit suicide and went on to hang himself while the footage was still being broadcast to his friends on Monday evening. Police said around 2,300 people had watched the videos live but none raised an alarm, alerted cops or even the man’s family members, who were away from home at the time.Amit Chauhan, who went by the nickname Rinku, logged into his Facebook account through his cellphone around 7.10pm on Monday at his Pataudi home and started the live video, urging those watching to share the video after his death. He broadcast two videos — the first, of 2.30 minutes, showed him walking upstairs to his first-floor room and tying a dupatta to a ceiling fan.In the next video, which he began broadcasting live soon after, he hanged himself. Chauhan was alone at home then. His wife, along with their two daughters (2 and 3 years old), had gone to a neighbour’s house after she and Chauhan allegedly had an argument. Chauhan’s parents were also away. This video continued for two hours, till his wife returned home and found him hanging.Police are examining the video. An officer said it was evident Chauhan was depressed but police were still in the dark about what prompted him to take his own life. On Tuesday morning, Chauhan’s family members cremated his body without informing the police, who were eventually informed by local residents. Police said Chauhan was unemployed and lived with his family at Jatoli village of Haileymandi (Pataudi), around 33km from Gurugram. His father Ashok is a farmer, and his elder brother is with the NSG.In his statement to the police, Ashok said Chauhan was undergoing treatment at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, for mental health issues.“Last evening, he and his wife had a fight over some family issues. Then she went to a neighbour’s place, along with her two daughters, to avoid further argument. When she returned home after some time, she found him hanging from the ceiling fan. His mobile phone was kept on the table,” Ashok said.Ashok also said his son used to get aggressive frequently and beat his family members. “On Monday, too, he had become aggressive and picked up a fight with his wife,” he said, adding his son was last taken to PGIMS-Rohtak around 15 days ago and had been prescribed medicines.ACP (Pataudi) Bir Singh said the family did not inform police about the suicide. The police were informed by some villagers around 9am on Tuesday.“By the time a police team reached Chauhan’s house, family members had already performed the last rites and were returning from the cremation ground. The family members refused to file any complaint, but police have recorded their statements,” said Singh.Another senior policeman said Chauhan had not mentioned what had led him to take the extreme step.“Though he had been in depression, he appeared calm in the two video clips posted on Facebook,” he said.
