NEW DELHI: A 66-year-old woman and her 43-year-old daughter were found murdered at their house in Guru Harkishan Nagar near Paschim Vihar on Saturday morning. Their bodies were found lying in pools of blood by their maid. The two women were identified as Shashi Talwar and her daughter Nidhi. Shashi hadn’t registered herself as a senior citizen with the police. For almost six months, she alone took care of her daughter who was a spastic after both her sons moved out of the house with their families.Police said they were alerted by a neighbour. The daughter’s body was found with hands and feet bounded and mouth gagged; the mother’s body was in the kitchen with a slit throat. The maid, Sumintra, told TOI that she had gone to work at the house on Friday morning. But when she came again at 4pm, the doorbell went unanswered. “This wasn’t unusual as they would often sleep around that time and not answer the door. I assumed that was the case so went back. This morning, I came to work at 9.10am and again the door was unanswered,” Sumintra said. She said she was worried but went to the adjacent house to work. About 20 minutes later, she returned and rang the bell again.“It made me suspicious. So I tried checking the rear exit. To my surprise, it was open. I rushed inside to check on them. I was shocked! Nidhi didi was lying on the bed, with her mouth gagged and hands and legs tied up with a white cloth. She had wounds on her arms and a pillow was on her face. When I removed it, I saw her face was bleeding profusely,” Sumintra said.“I screamed for help and ran to tell Shashi aunty. But when I reached the kitchen, I saw her lying face down, in a pool of blood. Her throat was still bleeding,” she said.Sumintra alerted the neighbours who then called up the police. DCP (outer) Seju Kuruvilla said a case was registered at Mianwali Nagar police station. The killer may have had a friendly entry, police said.Shashi’s throat had been slit with a butcher’s knife. The knife was found broken, suggesting that Shashi had resisted her killer. Police suspect it was either a robbery or someone known to them killed them. There were two teacups in the drawing room. The jewellery that Shashi was wearing wasn’t removed, but a few documents and some cash were missing from a cupboard in Nidhi’s room.Police said Shashi’s husband, Suresh Talwar, was a government servant who died three years ago. After his death, Shashi and Nidhi survived on his pension, which was around Rs 5,000. Apart from that, one of Shashi’s sons, Vishal (36), sent around Rs 10,000 every month to her and also visited her at least once a month. CCTV camera right outside the house had stopped working three days before the incident and the police are probing if this was part of a plan, police said. Other CCTV camera feeds have not given the police any concrete leads. The guards in the colony are also being questioned. There is only one entry/exit gate in the colony.
