New Delhi: Singer Kailash Kher , facing allegations of sexual harassment, on Sunday evening performed at Delhi government’s cultural event, Mayur Utsav , in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Phase-II, amid protests.A group of Delhi Congress workers staged a protest outside the venue — Vinod Nagar sports complex — alleging that the AAP government had “disrespected the women” by organising the programme on Nirbhaya’s sixth anniversary.Singer Sona Mohapatra had on Saturday urged the Arvind Kejriwal government to withdraw the invitation to Kher in view of the #MeToo allegations levelled against him by her and some other women. Mohapatra had also started an online petition on change.org where she reiterated her allegations of sexual harassment against Kher. The petition had received more than 7,763 signatures till the time of going to press.A group of local Congress workers, led by ex-MLA Anil Kumar Chaudhary, protested at one of the gates of the sports complex against Kher performing at the event on the day a young paramedic was brutally gangraped in Delhi in 2012. There was heavy police presence at the gates and the entry to the venue was restricted due to the protests. A group of youngsters, including women, carried placards and demanded immediate cancellation of the event.“We are not against the event. We have problem against the date the Delhi government chose for singing and dancing,” Chaudhary said. “Six years ago, a young girl was brutalised in Delhi. Instead of sending a message to the people of Delhi that the government cares about their safety and security and organising programmes to remember the brave girl, they are celebrating.”Kher performed some of his popular numbers in front of about 2000 people, whom he said were his own neighbours. “I am performing in my own area. I still have my house, my family, in Pocket F of Mayur Vihar Phase-II. I have spent years of my childhood here,” Kher said.Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia , who represents the Patparganj assembly constituency, said residents of Mayur Vihar Phase-II had requested him several times to call local boy Kailash Kher to perform in front of his “home crowd”.
