The Delhi High Court on Friday ordered "forthwith" release of former youth Congress leader Sushil Kumar Sharma, serving life term for the murder of his wife Naina Sahni in 1995. Sharma has already undergone over two decades of incarceration in the case. A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal passed the order. Now 56, Sharma had shot dead his wife in 1995, objecting to her alleged relationship with a male friend. He had then chopped her body into pieces and attempted to burn it in a restaurant oven. What is 1995 tandoor case and who is Sushil Kumar Sharma? # Sushil Kumar Sharma, former youth Congress leader, killed his wife Naina Sahni in the summer of 1995. After killing her, he chopped her body and attempted to destroy the remains by burning the chopped parts in a tandoor. This led to Sahni's murder being dubbed 'tandoor murder’. # After the Delhi government rejected his plea for early release, Sharma approached the Delhi High Court for relief. Also Read | 1995 tandoor murder case: Delhi HC orders immediate release of convict Sushil Sharma # Sharma had contended that he has already undergone the maximum prescribed sentence as mandated under the SRB guidelines. # In his petition, Sharma had said even though his case falls in the first category, he had also undergone 29 years of incarceration, with remission, and 23 years and six months, without remission. # Known as the Tandoor (oven) murder case, it is one of the landmark cases in India in which DNA evidence and a second autopsy were used to establish the guilt of the accused. # On the night of July 2, 1995, Sushil came home and saw Naina talking on the phone and consuming alcohol. Naina on seeing Sushil hung up. Sushil redialed the phone to find Matloob on the other end. Enraged he fatally shot Naina. # He took the body to a restaurant called Bagiya and tried to dispose it off with the restaurant manager, Keshav Kumar. # The body was chopped into pieces and put in a tandoor to burn. # Police arrested Keshav Kumar but Sharma managed to flee.
