Video JNU scholar falls off ridge rock dies

"After saying this, he tried to climb a few more steps but the rock started crumbling. Tiwari was taken to a private hospital in Vasant Kunj where he was declared dead on arrival. Tiwari fell backwards into a ditch and hit his head on a stone, leading to severe injuries.

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old PhD scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University died after falling off a rock in the ridge area next to the campus, popularly known as Parthasarthy Rocks , on Sunday.The scholar, Praveen Tiwari, was with a friend whom he had asked to shoot a video as he climbed the rocks and explained its characteristics. During the climb, a rock he held for support, crumbled. Tiwari fell backwards into a ditch and hit his head on a stone, leading to severe injuries. He was declared dead in hospital.In the video, Tiwari is seen climbing on a rock face. His friend, shooting the video, even warns him about the danger of falling off.In one of the conversations, the friend asks how Tiwari had managed to reach a foothold and whether he had previous experience of climbing rocks.In the clip, Tiwari manages to climb to the foothold and tells his friend that the best part of climbing the ridge was that there were no lizards or snakes in the crevices."After saying this, he tried to climb a few more steps but the rock started crumbling. He even told me that some of the rocks looked solid did not have the strength to hold him," the friend who recorded the video told the cops.In the video, the friend compares him to a character in the Bollywood movie, Lakshya, when suddenly one of the rocks he was resting his hand on, crumbles.DCP (south-west) Devender Arya said the police received information about the incident on Sunday after Tiwari's friend informed the hostel authorities about it. Tiwari was taken to a private hospital in Vasant Kunj where he was declared dead on arrival.
