Central Delhi to be fortress for BJP meet

NEW DELHI: Unprecedented security measures have been put in place in central Delhi ahead of BJP’s national council meet scheduled to be held at Ramlila Maidan on Friday and Saturday. Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Asaf Ali Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Minto Road, Ranjeet Singh Marg and flyover, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, Shraddhanand Marg, Ajmeri Gate side of New Delhi railway station and ITO are likely to be affected due to the restrictions. Police expect more than 12,000 BJP leaders and volunteers to attend the programme. A temporary Prime Minister’s Office will be set at Ramlila Maidan, apart from offices of BJP president Amit Shah and other senior dignitaries.More than 5,000 personnel from Delhi Police and other security agencies will be deployed around the venue from Friday morning. For the first time, policemen deployed for the security of VVIPs will be equipped with body cameras and intercom devices.The meet will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP members due to which most major roads near the ground would become inaccessible for the general public.

For the first time, policemen deployed for the security of VVIPs will be equipped with body cameras and intercom devices.The meet will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP members due to which most major roads near the ground would become inaccessible for the general public. A temporary Prime Minister’s Office will be set at Ramlila Maidan, apart from offices of BJP president Amit Shah and other senior dignitaries.More than 5,000 personnel from Delhi Police and other security agencies will be deployed around the venue from Friday morning. Police sources said that entry would be restricted and only people with passes and invitations would be allowed entry.A three-layer security cordon comprising Delhi Police, paramilitary forces and SPG will be put around the venue to prevent anyone from reaching the areas allotted for VVIPs. Police expect more than 12,000 BJP leaders and volunteers to attend the programme. Officers said that party volunteers have been issued bar-coded entry tickets to verify their identity.Joint commissioner (traffic) Alok Kumar said that to facilitate VIP movements and avoid traffic congestion, no traffic will be allowed on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg from Guru Nanak Chowk to Kamala market for the next two days.Commercial vehicles will be banned on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg from Rajghat to Ajmeri Gate, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg from ITO to Minto Road, DeshBandhu Gupta Road from Paharganj Chowk and Y-Point Sheela Cinema to Ajmeri Gate, Asaf Ali Road, Shraddhanand Marg, Vivekananda Marg (Minto Road) Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Marg from Guru Nanak Chowk to Barakhamba Road-Tolstoy Road crossing.Police officers said that some roads may be closed for VVIP movement, depending upon the situation. Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Asaf Ali Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Minto Road, Ranjeet Singh Marg and flyover, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, Shraddhanand Marg, Ajmeri Gate side of New Delhi railway station and ITO are likely to be affected due to the restrictions.
