NEW DELHI: The fire department has procured new suits to protect firemen from high-intensity fires. The suits will cover all the body parts of the firemen and make them immune to the intense heat in these fires. The suits can compete with the equipment used by the fire departments of western countries. The department is also in the process of procuring drones, robotic fire disposal systems and remote control fire dousing units.Officials added that crisis situations like the fire in a Bawana factory in 2018, where 17 workers died inside the premises, can be avoided to a large extent as firemen will have the means to enter a building more quickly with the addition of the new units. Home minister Satyendar Jain handed over the suits to the firemen during a ceremony on Thursday. Chief fire officer Atul Garg said that this is the first time in the history of the Delhi Fire Services that such a suit is being procured at Rs 50,000 apiece for the safety of firemen.Fire officials said that the suits are ideal to deal with intense fire situations. The fire department has a total strength of 1,750 people and they have procured 1,300 suits.Senior fire officials said there are higher chances of the walls of a house or factory collapsing due to excessive heat. This is when the robotic arms will come in handy as they will ensure that the blaze is doused at the earliest. The machine is being used in Germany, Japan and China and will have to be imported from one of these countries. The robotic arms will also have cameras and sensors to help the operator know the range of water, the amount of force required and volume available in the tank, officials said. They can change shape, be connected to pumps and throw water up to 100m from a height of almost 40m. They can be useful in congested lanes as fire tenders often get late in reaching such spots.
