NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old man was left battling for life after sustaining a bullet injury due to celebratory firing at an engagement ceremony in east Delhi’s Old Kondli on Sunday night. The accused fired a double-barrel gun while dancing.DCP (east) Jasmeet Singh said that the accused, Suraj, has been arrested. He has been booked for attempt to murder and under sections of the Arms Act.The ceremony was being conducted in a community centre in the area. The victim, Raj Kumar, who runs a paan shop near the centre, had gone inside to have dinner after closing his kiosk. Suraj and some men were dancing on the DJ floor. After some time, Suraj fired in the air and Kumar, who was having food at a distance, fell down. He was found bleeding from a bullet wound in his chest.An ambulance was called and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery. Police said he is in a stable condition, but remains under medical observation.After the PCR was called, a team reached the spot to start an inquiry. Cops scanned videos of the function and took statements of eyewitnesses. Suraj was taken into custody and sent to New Ashok Nagar police station. The gun has also been seized. It was found licensed to one Manoj Kumar from Meerut.Police have questioned Suraj as to how he got possession of the weapon and its owner has been asked to join in the investigation. Cops are probing whether the accused was under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the incident.
