GURUGRAM: Geeta Bhadana was going to her dairy for some work when she says she witnessed a scuffle break out nearby. She claims two boys from her village, Nayagaon , had got into an argument with a Muslim family, who had allegedly beaten them up. “They slapped one of the boys and hit the other on the head with an iron instrument. That’s when my husband intervened to calm things down,” Geeta said. Her husband Dhirender is one of those accused of attacking the Muslim family’s members and vandalising their house in nearby Bhoop Singh Nagar on March 21 and is currently in police custody.Sheetal, the sister of another accused, tempo driver Mahesh, told TOI that on Holi, her brother had lunch with them and then went out with a friend. “We don’t know what happened afterwards, as we haven’t spoken to him since. But we saw he had injury marks on his body,” she said. While five men— Dhirender, Mahesh, Amit, Dharmendra and Sunil — have been arrested in the case, police are on the lookout for another 10 youths from the village, who are currently missing. They include Raj Kumar who, villagers claimed, needed 12 stitches on his head. Most are young men between 15-30 years of age. The villagers said they didn’t know the whereabouts of Raj Kumar.According to Nayagaon residents, all youths are scared of police action. Some have gone into hiding and, according to villagers, haven’t even contacted their families since last Thursday. They said no shot had been fired at the Muslim family, as a complaint has alleged citing a video (the spark seen in the video, villagers argued, was from a rock hitting a cable and causing it).Chetram, the grandfather of another accused, school bus driver Rohit Bhadana (18), said, “It was a straightforward fight between boys over a cricket match that has been given a communal colour,” adding they are interested in talking to the victims and resolving the matter mutually. On Monday morning, villagers gathered around the chaupal and decided that if police don’t register their counter complaint within the next couple of days, they will hold a protest. They alleged thus far, the probe was one-sided as cops didn’t even register their complaint.Balbir Singh, a resident, said they had tried to submit their complaint twice. “We approached Bhondsi police station, but they didn’t register our complaint. Our sons have also received injuries, but no one is listening to our side of the story,” said Singh, adding that “the fight was started by the other party, and we want a cross FIR to be filed”.Villagers also accused police of randomly picking up people and questioning them about the whereabouts of the accused, whose faces were clearly visible in the video of the attack that was shot by one of the members of the family under attack and was shared widely on social media. “They come at any hour and enter without knocking. It doesn’t matter if there are any men at home or not. Last night, they barged into a widow’s house,” said a woman, requesting anonymity.
