Nigerian national held for posing as woman, duping ex-govt official

In 2018, a retired government official complained that he came in contact with the accused, who had a username Grace Dennis, through Facebook and became friends with him, said DCP Monika Bhardwaj. He deposited Rs 35.8 lakh in nine different bank accounts, said the DCP. The contact numbers of the accused were put on surveillance and bank account details were obtained. On the basis of technical surveillance, raids were conducted in Jaipur, Ajmer, Agra, Aligarh and many other places in Delhi, but the accused could not be traced.

In 2018, a retired government official complained that he came in contact with the accused, who had a username Grace Dennis, through Facebook and became friends with him, said DCP Monika Bhardwaj. Posing as a woman, the accused informed the victim that his mother was suffering from a serious aliment and was admitted to a hospital in India, while he was stuck at the Mumbai airport due to some documentation. The victim got a phone call from an unknown number and the caller posed himself as a customs officer and asked him to submit some amount for clearance. He deposited Rs 35.8 lakh in nine different bank accounts, said the DCP. The contact numbers of the accused were put on surveillance and bank account details were obtained. Through technical specification, the accused was identified as Arthur Okele, Bhardwaj said. On the basis of technical surveillance, raids were conducted in Jaipur, Ajmer, Agra, Aligarh and many other places in Delhi, but the accused could not be traced. The accused was continuously changing mobile phones and SIM cards during this period. On May 3, he was arrested from Outer Ring Road, the DCP said. The accused disclosed that he came to India in 2014. Later, he along with his accomplices started duping people through Facebook. They posed as girls living abroad, said the DCP. After befriending victims on the Internet and at times through phone calls, they would seek money in a bank account for payment of customs duty on some pretext, said the DCP. Raids are on to nab the other accused.
