New Delhi: Scores of people gathered outside the old Delhi Police Headquarters to protest the force's handling of the situation after an agitation against the new citizenship aw near Jamia university on Sunday turned violent. Meanwhile, Delhi Police claimed that the situation was under control and proper steps being taken to maintain safety and security in the city. The protesters raised anti-police slogans outside the headquarters in ITO area after a call for it was given by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union. Meanwhile, Delhi Police claimed that the situation was under control and proper steps being taken to maintain safety and security in the city. The protesters raised anti-police slogans outside the headquarters in ITO area after a call for it was given by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union. Other students bodies endorsed the protest call. At around 8.30 pm on Sunday JNU students through social media sent an emergency message for the protest at old PHQ. "Emergency Protest Demo for JMI. All students and citizens of Delhi are appealed to assemble at Delhi Police Headquarters, ITO at 9 pm tonight, to ensure that the undeclared emergency in Jamia is lifted immediately," read the message sent by JNUSU. Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa along with other DCPs reached the spot to control the situation. According to protestors, they want stringent action against policemen involved in allegedly beating the students at the campus. Meanwhile, a senior officer from Delhi Police claimed that they have taken action as per law. "There was no student death or police firing during the protest," police said. The massive police force has been deployed outside the PHQ, while Vikas Marg road from ITO towards Laxmi Nagar has been sealed. The police force from different districts reached the spot where they were briefed by senior officials. Meanwhile, police commissioner Amulya Patnaik said that he is keeping tab on the developments at PHQ. The traffic was affected due to the protest. DCP Randhawa spoke to the media and said, "The situation is under control now, I will tell the people of Delhi to not pay attention to rumours. Delhi Police is monitoring the situation. We will soon identify the anti-social elements & take stringent action against them."
