With the objective of improving government schools in Delhi, the state government is conducting routine inspections, Education Minister Ashish Sood said on Thursday. He also said this year, the Delhi Government has increased the education budget by more than 19 per cent, approving a total budget of `19,291 crore to improve the condition of all government schools in the city, thereby securing a better future for students. Sood made these assertions after inspecting two government schools in the Shakur Basti Assembly constituency — Sarvodaya Co-educational School, C Block, Saraswati Vihar and Government Senior Secondary School, Rani Bagh. During the visit, the Minister interacted with the students and conducted a Q and A session. MLA Karnail Singh, the Director of Education, PWD officials, and officers from other concerned departments were also present during the inspection. The Minister stated that based on complaints from MLAs, the government is conducting routine inspections of Delhis schools and taking corrective action wherever deficiencies are found by issuing timely directives to the respective departments. During the inspection, the Minister said the swimming pools at both schools were found were in a dilapidated condition. Built in 2018 at a cost of `2.5 crore each, these pools have never been made operational. There is no adequate water supply, and poor-quality materials appear to have been used in their construction. At the Rani Bagh school, the pools flooring is crumbling, and the surrounding tiles are detaching. The Minister instructed the Director of Education on the spot to initiate an investigation into both swimming pools and to order a vigilance and departmental inquiry against the PWD engineers involved Sood further criticised the failures of the previous government, stating that due to their negligence, government schools were ignored, leading to a loss of opportunities for children and rampant corruption. The Minister also directed the Director of Education to install air conditioning systems in the multipurpose halls of both schools, so that students can get relief during the summer heat. Also, he also gave orders to ensure proper cleanliness, access to clean drinking water, electricity, and safety arrangements in the schools especially for girls. Notably, the Rani Bagh school building is nearly 40 years old, and the Minister proposed preparing a plan to construct a new building in its place. While interacting with the students, the Minister enquired about their education and the facilities being provided in their schools. Many students expressed satisfaction with the education provided by the Delhi Government. Some also shared their future aspirations of becoming doctors, engineers, and administrative officers. The Minister advised the students that hard work is the key to success, saying, If you want to succeed in life, hard work is the only path. During his interaction, the Education Minister underscored the significant and ground-breaking reforms taking place in the education sector under the leadership of Prime Minister  Narendra Modi. He noted that gaining access to higher education no longer depends on personal recommendations or hefty donations.
