Delhi Metro launches priority security check for special category passengers

  • | Monday | 2nd June, 2025

In a move aimed at making public transport more inclusive and commuter-friendly, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a priority security check facility for special category passengers across all metro stations. The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), is designed to ease travel for passengers who may require additional support. This newly introduced facility will benefit persons with disabilities (divyangjans), pregnant women, women travelling with infants, senior citizens, and individuals with visible injuries. These commuters will now be given preference during the mandatory security check process, allowing them to move through checkpoints with greater ease and minimal inconvenience. According to DMRC, the initiative reflects the organisations ongoing commitment to creating a more accessible and empathetic public transportation system. The objective of this initiative is to provide a smooth and hassle-free travel experience for these passengers, the statement said, noting that the move is part of a broader effort to enhance inclusivity within the metro network. DMRC also clarified that in cases where eligibility for the facility is unclear or disputed, security personnel may ask the commuter to provide a relevant document to verify their status. CISF staff and DMRC authorities are working closely to issue clear operational guidelines and ensure that the system is uniformly implemented across all stations. For years, DMRC has prioritised the needs of differently-abled and senior citizens by equipping metro stations with various supportive features, such as tactile paths, reserved seating, elevators, ramps, and wheelchair services. The priority access at security checkpoints further strengthens this commitment, aiming to reduce wait times and physical strain for vulnerable groups. By taking this step, DMRC reaffirms its commitment to making metro travel more inclusive, accessible and considerate of the needs of all passengers, the release stated. DMRCs efforts in accessible infrastructure and socially responsible travel systems have long set a benchmark in the country. With the introduction of this new facility, Delhi Metro continues to lead by example in transforming urban transport into a space that respects dignity and diversity. Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, underscored the significance of the initiative, saying, Our aim is to make every aspect of metro travel convenient for all segments of society, and this step is part of that larger mission.
