Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday rolled out a comprehensive 45-point action plan to clean and rejuvenate the Yamuna River, as part of a broader mission to upgrade the citys water supply and sewerage infrastructure. Chairing a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat with officials of the Delhi Jal Board, the Chief Minister described the Yamuna rejuvenation effort as a central component of her governments vision for a clean, modern and sustainable capital. The 45-point plan focuses on multiple critical areas including treated water inflow into the river, drainage and sewage management, stormwater systems, solid waste control, governance and enforcement mechanisms, gap identification and monitoring, riverfront development, and citizen awareness campaigns. The aim is not only to eliminate pollution from the river but to revive its ecosystem and transform it into a clean, vibrant, and accessible water body. Accompanied by Cabinet Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh and senior Jal Board officials, the Chief Minister reiterated that the Delhi Government is implementing a phased and multi-pronged strategy for cleaning the Yamuna. This includes the expansion of the sewerage network, treatment of drains before outflow into the river, and the construction and modernization of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). She informed that under AMRUT 2.0, capacity enhancement is underway at eight key STPs located at Yamuna Vihar, Okhla, Keshopur, Vasant Kunj, Ghitorni, Mehrauli, Molarbandh, Nilothi and Pappankalan. Additionally, the government plans to build 13 new Decentralized STPs and 27 more DSTPs to ensure that untreated wastewater does not flow into the Yamuna. CM Gupta also stressed the need for urgent infrastructure replacement, noting that many parts of Delhi are still operating on decades-old water and sewer pipelines. She directed officials to conduct detailed assessments and prepare a phase-wise plan to replace aging infrastructure using modern technology. She has set an ambitious target of laying water and sewer lines in all unauthorized colonies by December 2027, a move she said is critical to equitable urban development. The meeting also reviewed the status of 303 drainage projects worth `8,000 crore that are currently underway across the capital. These projects include redevelopment of major drains, permanent solutions for waterlogging, the installation of modern pump houses, expansion of stormwater systems and scientific drainage network planning. The Chief Minister instructed departments to adhere strictly to deadlines while ensuring quality and compliance with environmental norms. Addressing stormwater intrusion into sewers, especially in unauthorised colonies, CM Gupta directed departments to prepare a separate action plan to prevent such issues from burdening the sewage system. She also stated that the Yamuna cleaning campaign would involve not just government machinery but also widespread public participation. A city-wide awareness drive will be launched to educate citizens about river cleanliness, pollution prevention, and their role in protecting natural resources. To ensure accountability and on-ground implementation, the Chief Minister announced that she would personally inspect the progress of Yamuna rejuvenation every month by visiting different stretches of the river and reviewing work in real time.a
