Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, on Monday, announced that the department will carry out a city-wide operation to repair 3,400 potholes in a single day on Tuesday, covering more than 1,400 kilometres of roads across Delhi. The initiative comes just ahead of the monsoon and is aimed at improving road safety, easing traffic movement, and restoring public trust in infrastructure maintenance. The one-day operation will be carried out using over 200 maintenance vans equipped with modern repair equipment and high-quality materials. More than 1,000 personnel, including 70 Assistant Engineers (AEs), 150 Junior Engineers (JEs), and ground workers, will be deployed. Roads have been divided into zones to facilitate coordinated and time-bound execution. The minister said the campaign goes beyond routine maintenance. Its not that no work has been done over the past few months — pothole repair has been ongoing. But with the monsoon approaching, weve taken a call to act decisively. Tomorrows campaign is not just about road repair, its about fulfilling a promise to the people, he said. To ensure accountability, every pothole repair will be documented through geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs, both before and after the work. Senior engineers and zonal AEs will be held responsible for the quality and completeness of repairs in their areas. The minister also confirmed he will be on the ground throughout the day to monitor operations in real time. The key is honest and standard-based work, Singh said. When roads are built or repaired to PWD specifications and without corruption, potholes dont form. That is the system we are trying to institutionalise. The potholes identified for repair have been compiled using public complaints, zonal inspections and drone surveys. The plan focuses on high-risk zones, internal lanes and arterial roads, reflecting the departments effort to prioritise safety and traffic decongestion. As part of longer-term goals, the minister noted that PWD has already completed 150 km of new roads, with another 100 km in progress. The department is targeting 500 km of road construction by March 2026. Local MLAs will also oversee operations in their constituencies, maintaining direct communication with the public. Post-repair quality inspections will be mandatory, and maintenance vans will remain active through the monsoon to prevent recurring damage. This is not just a day of work, Singh told officials and workers. Its a day of public service. Filling a pothole is not simply about pouring asphalt — its about offering relief to daily commuters and proving that the system can respond.
