Anupam Colony: New benchmark for sustainability in Delhi

Aptly named Anupam Colony, Delhi now boasts of a unique  locality having facilities like processing of dry, wet and horticulture waste on site and RRR Centre.  The first of its kind cluster also has a Neki ki Diwar for needy persons with the aim of Together for a Cleaner and Greener Tomorrow for sanitation sustainability.  New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Chairman Keshav Chandra on Thursday declared D1 & D2 Block and Satya Sadan Offficers Flats, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi as Anupam Colony.  After declaration, Chairman, NDMC informed this colony is a step towards recognition of unique swachhta initiatives adopted by the local residents of Satya Sadan Colony in Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi. He said wet waste collected from the houses by waste collectors engaged by RWA is converted into organic compost by processing it. Dry waste collected from the Colony is further segregated into 12 different categories by the waste collectors is first of its kind in Delhi. The Chairman said we have installed a number of wire mesh rounders in parks and on side of roads for composting of horticulture waste. Organic compost prepared by NDMC will be distributed among residents in cotton bags free of cost and extra compost will be utilized by the Horticulture Department of NDMC in green areas. He also said e-waste is collected separately and is sent to authorised CPCB recyclers. Apart from this, there is a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle/Neki ki Deewar centre at the same site where the residents can donate their old usable items such as clothes, toys and footwear for use by the needy persons. The Chairman also announced that this initiative will be replicated in the other colonies of NDMC area on the basis of results of our first step of this Anupam Colony project. This is all aimed towards creating self-sustainable colonies where all the waste generated is utilised onsite. He said that more such colonies will be made self-sustainable in the near future.   The declaration was held at T-Point of Madhu Limay Marg and Satya Marg, Chankyapuri, New Delhi in a simple ceremony today which was attended by Secretary, NDMC — Tariq Thomas, Advisor (SWM & Sanitation), NDMC – Rajiv Kumar Jain, Members of RWA, Priyam Krishna and Neerja Biswas along with other senior officers.
