Monsoon brings light rain and Yellow alert

  • | Monday | 30th June, 2025

Light to moderate rain lashed several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Sunday, marking the official onset of the southwest monsoon in the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the advancement of the monsoon and issued a yellow alert for the city, forecasting more showers in the coming days. Intermittent rainfall throughout the day caused disruptions across Delhi, particularly affecting traffic movement. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas, slowing down vehicular flow and causing congestion on major roads. The rainfall began in the early hours and resumed again in the evening, aggravating the situation for commuters. The IMD also recorded several incidents linked to the weather. Around ten PCR calls were received regarding tree uprooting caused by strong winds and rainfall. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to property were reported, officials confirmed. Rainfall varied across regions, with the Palam weather station recording the highest rainfall at 13.6 mm, followed by Ayanagar at 9.9 mm, Lodhi Road at 5.3 mm, and the Ridge area at 0.3 mm. The rainfall was accompanied by high humidity, which reached 98 percent by 6 pm, adding to the discomfort levels across the city. Rainfall led to traffic disruptions at multiple points across the capital. Traffic was affected near India Gate, ITO, Old Rohtak Road, Peeragarhi Chowk, Shankar Road, Madhuban Chowk, near Sarai Rohilla Railway Station, and many other areas due to the rain. We have deployed additional personnel to resolve the traffic issues at the earliest, a Delhi Traffic Police official said.  Another officer said congestion was also reported in parts of South, Southeast, and Southwest Delhi, including a traffic jam along the Delhi-Gurugram highway (NH-8).  Meanwhile, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) said it had received only two minor complaints of waterlogging in its area. Apart from these, there have been no complaints of incidents like tree falls in Lutyens Delhi, an NDMC official added. However, PWD areas reported multiple complaints of waterlogging.  Around 10-12 complaints of waterlogging were received in PWD areas. Most of them were resolved soon by the response teams, and traffic was not affected much, a PWD official said. The IMD issued a yellow alert for Delhi and surrounding NCR areas, warning residents to stay vigilant and follow weather-related advisories. According to the department, the city is likely to continue experiencing light to moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms till at least June 30. The weather alert is part of IMDs Nowcast system, which provides real-time weather updates for short-term planning. The minimum temperature of the city settled at 24 degrees Celsius, while the maximum reached 32 degrees Celsius —both slightly below the seasonal average due to cloud cover and rain. Earlier in the day, by around 11 am, several areas in South Delhi, including Vasant Kunj, Malviya Nagar, Hauz Khas, Mehrauli, Kalkaji, Tughlakabad, Chhattarpur, IGNOU, Aya Nagar, and Deramandi, experienced light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds, lightning, and thunderstorms. The IMD noted that these pre-monsoon conditions gradually transitioned into the full-scale monsoon by late afternoon. The arrival of the monsoon was officially declared on Saturday after it advanced further over western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and finally over Delhi. The early showers have brought much-needed respite from the recent spell of dry and hot weather. With the monsoon now set in, the IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, especially in flood-prone areas, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours. Civic agencies have been put on alert to address waterlogging and other monsoon-related challenges over the coming weeks. In contrast, western Uttar Pradesh, including areas such as Noida and Ghaziabad, witnessed short but intense spells of rain, while parts of Gurugram were also lashed by showers.
