In a significant step towards sustainable sanitation and community-led cleanliness, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC)on Thursday declared Bharti Nagar as the second Anupam Colony within its jurisdiction. The announcement was made by NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra at a ceremony held at Bharti Nagar. The Anupam Colony initiative, launched with the vision of Together for a Cleaner and Greener Tomorrow, recognises residential areas that demonstrate exceptional commitment to innovative Swachhta (cleanliness) practices. Bharti Nagar has now joined Chanakyapuri — D1D2 officers flats and Satya Sadan—declared as the first Anupam Colony last month—in setting new benchmarks for waste management and environmental stewardship in the Capital. The declaration ceremony witnessed the presence of NDMC Secretary, Dr Tariq Thomas, Rajiv Kumar Jain — Advisor SWM and other senior NDMC officials and enthusiastic representatives of local Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs), whose collective efforts have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. Highlighting the key features of Bharti Nagars transformation, Keshav Chandra lauded the residents for embracing unique cleanliness initiatives including 100 per cent segregation of waste at source and on-site composting of wet waste from households, on-site processing of horticultural waste through joint collaboration between the RWA and NDMC, Moreover, Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where dry waste is meticulously segregated into 10 distinct categories for recycling and reuse, RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Centre/Neki Ki Deewar (Wall of Kindness) — a community initiative to donate reusable items for the benefit of underprivileged individuals were also undertaken by the colony. Speaking on the occasion, Chandra emphasised that the Anupam Colony model showcases how collective citizen participation, when supported by robust civic infrastructure, can lead to tangible improvements in urban cleanliness and sustainability.
